Mom’s Visit

We were so happy when Katie’s mom decided to come out for a last minute visit. Unfortunately, Brent was in the States for work for most of Mary’s visit, but it was a wonderful and busy week full of mother-daughter QT.

We went to a number of shows – “The Lion King” and “Jersey Boys” in the West End and “Cirque Du Soleil” at the beautiful Royal Albert Hall. We wondered if the British cast of Jersey Boys would be able to properly capture the Jersey accent and sure enough they did. We really enjoyed the shows and thought we could easily become theatre junkies (with three shows in one week maybe we qualified).

Some other highlights included a day sampling goodies at Borough Market in Southwark, an afternoon at Sir Richard Branson’s colorful rooftop garden, a tour of Greenwich followed by lunch at the historic Trafalgar Tavern and a visit to the lovely and posh Fortnum & Mason department store to purchase tea and sample shortbread. Of course there was the requisite ladies stop at Harrods, where we pondered the purchase of a £19,000 table (apx $30,000 USD) made from New Mexican juniper and turquoise…why not?

Even though it has been extremely cold and the days are short this time of year (sunset around 4:30) we made the most of our afternoons. We shopped for silver at the nearby Portobello Rd Antique Market, walked the stables of Camden Market, admired the canal boats of Little Venice and made fun of the so called “art” at the Tate Modern museum. On Sunday, Mary even managed to get Katie to the church across the street from her flat, St. Mary’s of the Angels.

Thanks for visiting mom and we can’t wait to have you again soon!
